sooooo i saw the passion pit/palm pixi commercial this week, and i’ve read some stuff on tumblr denouncing how quick they were to sell out.

are you serious? i thought we’d moved beyond this. i don’t think bands have to choose between being a cultural force or a commodity anymore. figuring out how to create a sustainable career in an unstable industry ain’t easy. how many of their fans actually paid full price for their music? passion pit was already a happy joke (an awesome joke that i love), and  the members of the band were in on it! not sure that passion pit never claimed to be a restrained, serious band - a bro wrote an album with a shitload of synths for his girlfriend, and NOW WHAT? get that cash!

if a band can get bloated corporations to pay them mad bills to use their song in a stupid 45 second commercial that will be forgotten in two months, good. it’s a pretty awesome system. maybe my perspective on this has changed because i work in advertising. regardless, i salute them.
